Google Merchant Center and free product listings
Google Merchant Center is the account where a store uploads data about its products (name, price, availability, photos, link) so that Google can show them in Shopping, search, images and other services. Free product listings are the display of such products without paying for clicks; Shopping ads through Google Ads run on the same data but are paid.
In plain words
Google doesn't see your store as a shop window. It needs a list: what you sell, for how much, whether it's in stock, where to buy. Merchant Center is the place where this list is kept and checked. Then Google decides to whom and where to show the product. Display is not guaranteed even with free listings turned on (Google, free listings).
Where free listings appear
According to Google's help page, they can appear in search (rich results with price, availability and reviews), in the Shopping tab, in Google Images and Lens, on YouTube (in a limited number of countries), and also in Maps and Gemini. The customer goes to your site to place the order (Google, free listings).
Is it available in Ukraine
Ukraine is in Google's country table for Shopping ads and free listings; the currency is the hryvnia (UAH); Ukrainian is among the supported languages (Google, supported countries). The mark next to Ukraine means the Shopping tab is available to users there. Which exact features are available in Ukraine today, check in your account: Google writes that availability depends on the country, device and other factors (Google, Share product data).
What you need to get started
Required attributes for every product: `id`, `title`, `link`, `image_link`, `price`, `description`, `availability`. Depending on the product, you also need `condition` (for used goods), `brand`, `gtin` (or `mpn` if there is no GTIN) and, for clothing, `color`, `size`, `age_group`, `gender`, `item_group_id` (Google, free listings).
What Google requires in the data specification (Google, product data specification):
- The title and description must match the product page; no promotional insertions and no all caps. Title up to 150 characters.
- Photos without text overlays, watermarks and borders. The specification states a new minimum of 500×500 pixels; Google writes that it will begin applying it from 31 January 2027.
- The price must match the page, the markup and the cart. For countries other than the US and Canada, the price is submitted including VAT. The customer must be able to buy at this price without a membership.
- Availability: `in_stock`, `out_of_stock`, `preorder` or `backorder`, and it must match too.
- GTIN (the manufacturer's barcode) is "strongly recommended if available". A wrong GTIN can lead to the product being disapproved, and a missing one where it exists can limit visibility. Add it only after making sure it is correct.
Free listings apply only to product pages, not to the homepage, policies or categories (Google, free listings).
Feed and markup: how they work together
Google advises submitting data in two ways at once: markup on product pages and a Merchant Center feed. Markup helps understand the pages and verify the feed, while the feed gives the full list of products and control over update frequency. It recommends turning on automatic updates in Merchant Center so data is corrected when the price or availability on the site differs; for large or frequently changing catalogs, the feed is uploaded regularly or updated through the API (Google, Share product data). How to build the feed itself is in the article Product feed, and about markup in Structured data.
Merchant Center and AI answers
Google writes in its 2026 guide: generative search answers can include product cards and product information, and Merchant Center feeds help products appear in these answers and other places in search (Google, 2026). Google's search guidelines also advise keeping Merchant Center up to date (Google, AI features).
New things that, judging by the sources, are not yet in Ukraine:
- The "AI performance insights" report in Merchant Center (announced 1 June 2026): shows a brand's share of presence in AI search and Gemini compared with similar brands. Rolling out in the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand; Ukraine is not mentioned (Semrush, retelling Google's announcement, 2026). This is a secondary source; check the announcement on Google's official pages.
- Universal Cart and checkout via the UCP protocol (Google I/O, 19 May 2026): according to Google, it appears in the US "this summer", then Canada, Australia, and later the UK (Google, 2026). For Ukrainian stores this is so far just a direction of development.
Common mistakes
- Price or availability mismatch between the feed and the site: the product may be disapproved or shown incorrectly.
- Photos with text and overlays.
- Made-up GTINs or barcodes that haven't passed validation.
- Expired promotional prices in markup (see Structured data).
- Promotional text in the title ("HIT! Cheapest!").
- Shipping and returns not set up: Google writes that a return policy can influence the customer's decision; shipping is mandatory in a number of countries (examples are given in the help page). Whether it is mandatory for Ukraine, check the help page or your account; adding shipping settings is worthwhile in any case.
