CDP

| Article: 4 min read | Business systems

CDP (customer data platform) is software that collects customer data from all of a company's systems, merges it into a single profile of a person, stores that profile permanently and passes it to other systems: analytics, marketing, support. In 2026 the CDP Institute defines it as "software that creates and maintains a persistent, unified customer database that is accessible to other systems" (CDP Institute).

In plain words

The same buyer looks different in different systems: in the store they are "Olena with an e-mail", in analytics an anonymous device, in the mailing list a subscriber, in the CRM a contact from a call. A CDP tries to recognize that this is one person and gather everything into one profile: what she viewed, what she bought, what she responded to.

According to Wikipedia, a CDP works with these kinds of data: identity, descriptive, behavioral, interaction, transactional and qualitative. Most of them are first-party data from the website, mobile app, CRM and offline purchases. The key capability is identity resolution: linking records of one person by e-mail, device IDs and cookies. There are two approaches: deterministic matching on an explicit identifier and probabilistic matching on behavior and context (Wikipedia, CDP).

Why a store needs it

  • Segments and personalization across all channels from a single profile: for example, not showing an ad for a product the person has already bought.
  • One view of the customer for support, mailings and analytics (for example, for RFM and LTV).
  • First-party data instead of dependence on third-party data. In October 2025 Google updated its plans for Privacy Sandbox technologies and reminded that Chrome keeps its current approach, where the choice about third-party cookies stays with the user (Privacy Sandbox, 17.10.2025). This does not remove the need for your own data, because a user can opt out of tracking, and laws require a lawful basis for collection.

When you need one

  • Customer data is scattered across five or more systems: store, mobile app, mailings, CRM, call center, offline.
  • You have a large flow of customers and several channels where consistent communication is needed.
  • You have people who will actually use the segments (a marketer, an analyst).

When it's too early

  • A small store with one channel: the store admin, analytics and a CRM or mailing service are enough.
  • There is no clean basic data (duplicate customers, no single identifier): a CDP won't fix this, it will reproduce the mess.
  • There are no scenarios that need a profile. First formulate 2–3 concrete actions (for example, "win back customers who haven't bought in 90 days"), then look for a tool.

CDP, CRM and DMP

  • A CRM keeps known customers and the work with them (calls, deals, history). A CDP collects a wider footprint, including behavioral, from many sources. Wikipedia has no direct comparison with CRM: it only says that the term was introduced by David Raab in 2013, when CRMs and data warehouses were not built for a persistent unified profile.
  • A DMP is a system for large anonymous third-party datasets, mainly for short-term ad targeting. A CDP builds persistent profiles of known customers. DMP data, according to Wikipedia, usually lives 30–90 days.
  • There is also the composable CDP: the data stays in your cloud warehouse instead of being copied into a separate product (Wikipedia).

How it connects to other systems

A CDP sits between sources and channels: it takes data from the store platform, analytics, the CRM and the accounting system, and passes it to mailings, ads and support. All of this is connected through API and integrations. Many CDPs are SaaS.

Privacy and the law

A person's profile is personal data. Ukraine has the Law "On Personal Data Protection" No. 2297-VI in force (marked as valid on the Verkhovna Rada page) (zakon.rada.gov.ua). According to a secondary source, bill No. 8153 on its new version had not yet come into force as of May 2026 (Recording Law, 08.07.2026). Check the bill's status on the Verkhovna Rada website. If you work with customers from the EU, GDPR applies. This is not legal advice.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a CDP "for order's sake" without scenarios.
  • Collecting everything with no basis and no retention periods.
  • Failing to agree which system holds the "master" customer: CRM, CDP or the store.

FAQ

What is a CDP in plain words? A system that gathers everything about a customer from different sources into one profile and hands it to other programs.

How is a CDP different from a CRM? A CRM is for managers' work with customers. A CDP is for merging data from many sources, including behavioral data, and feeding it to marketing and analytics.

Does a small online store need a CDP? Usually not: the store, analytics and a CRM or mailing tool are enough.

What is first-party data? Data you collect yourself from your own customers: orders, on-site behavior, subscriptions. A CDP is built from exactly this.
