How to launch an online store in 2026
Launching an online store is a sequence of decisions from checking demand to the first paid orders: work out the money on a single order, register the business, choose a platform, build the catalog, connect payment and delivery, set up analytics and bring in the first customers. The order matters: choose the platform and design only after you have checked demand and calculated your unit economics.
The article does not recommend any platform or service. All amounts in the examples are made up unless a source link is next to them.
Step 1. Check demand before building anything
The goal of this step: understand whether people search for your product and who already sells it.
- Search queries. Google Ads has a free Keyword Planner tool: it suggests related queries, shows the approximate number of searches per month and the average cost per click, and the spend-based forecast is updated daily and depends on seasonality (Google Ads Help). A forecast is an estimate, not a guarantee, but the order of magnitude is visible.
- Competitors. According to Rozetka's co-founders, together with Prom it holds about half of the Ukrainian market, with almost 100,000 sellers across the two platforms (Interfax-Ukraine, 13.03.2026). So in popular categories you will have to explain to the customer why they should go somewhere other than a marketplace.
- A cheap test. Sell 10-30 units before buying stock: through a marketplace, social media or a simple page with a form. For how to test an idea, read the article SaaS or a custom store.
- How people choose. According to a Deloitte Ukraine study (survey of 28.11-11.12.2025, over 1,000 smartphone owners aged 18+), 34% of Ukrainians buy after reading online reviews, and 19% name TikTok as their main platform for finding new products (dev.ua, 18.03.2026). For a new category this is a hint about where to look for the first customers.
Result of the step: a few dozen queries with volumes, a list of 5-10 competitors and a view on why a customer would choose you.
Step 2. Calculate unit economics
Demand does not mean profit. Build a calculation for one order: price minus purchase cost, delivery, payment fees, packaging, returns and acquisition cost. The details of the formula are in the article on unit economics, and the basic concepts are margin, CAC and average order value.
Example (made-up numbers). A product sells for 1,300 UAH, purchase cost 700 UAH, delivery and packaging 120 UAH, payment fee 20 UAH, taxes about 80 UAH, advertising per order 250 UAH. That leaves 130 UAH, or 10% of the price. If 8% of orders are returned or not picked up, that 130 UAH almost disappears. For reference: the average online order in Ukraine in 2025, according to WayForPay, was about 1,320 UAH (dev.ua, 25.05.2026), but this is an average across the whole market, not a guideline for your niche.
If after the calculation what is left per order is less than you will pay for advertising in the first test, change the price, the range or the channel, not the platform.
Step 3. Legal form
For most small stores, a sole proprietor (FOP) is chosen at this point. What is known from recent sources:
- A FOP can be registered online through the Diia Portal with a qualified electronic signature, and the process takes a few minutes (Golovbukh, 23.03.2026, citing the Ministry of Justice's explanation).
- FOP or LLC. According to a NetFreedom article (23.03.2026), a FOP is registered free of charge, while an LLC costs from 5,000 UAH plus a charter and requires full bookkeeping; the author recommends an LLC mainly for investments of a million hryvnias or more or for work with foreign partners (NetFreedom). This is the author's opinion, not a legal norm.
- Whether you need a status if you sell from Instagram or Telegram. The author of the same article writes that systematic selling for profit counts as entrepreneurship even without a website, and cites Article 42 of the Commercial Code. Check your own situation with an accountant.
- Group 3 of the single tax in 2026 (according to a monobank article, 16.06.2026): income limit 10,091,049 UAH a year, rate 5% of income without VAT or 3% for a VAT payer, military levy 1% of income, unified social contribution (ESV) 1,902.34 UAH a month (monobank). The tax is calculated on income, not profit, so with a thin margin this matters.
- PRRO. Whether a PRRO (a software cash register) is needed depends on the group, the type of settlements and the place of activity. The State Tax Service clarified that for online trade without a separate premises, the address in the RRO/PRRO is the place of registration and accounting with the tax authority (7eminar, 20.08.2026). More in the article on PRRO.
This article is not legal or tax advice. Amounts and limits change every year; check them with the State Tax Service or an accountant.
Step 4. Platform
Here you choose between a ready-made SaaS platform, a custom store and a quick prototype. The short conclusion: the simplest option is enough to test an idea, and it is worth deciding on development when you hit limitations. A full comparison with a table by stage is in the article SaaS or a custom store. Write your platform requirements before you look at demos: what exactly the catalog must do, which delivery and payment methods, which integrations with accounting (technical specification).
Step 5. Catalog
A catalog is not just product cards but the structure by which customers and Google find a product. Set up one template for the name, description and attributes, photos in one style, and arrange variants (color, size) as variants of one product. For the category tree, filters and page URLs, see the article catalog structure.
Step 6. Payment and delivery
This is exactly where stores lose orders. A Baymard study (average across 50 studies, updated 22.09.2025): 70.22% of carts are abandoned, and the named reasons include extra delivery costs and fees (40%), slow delivery (20%), forced account creation (18%), distrust of entering a card (19%), a declined card (10%), too few payment methods (9%) (Baymard). Another 42% were just browsing.
Delivery. Nova Poshta raised its rates on April 13, 2026: for example, a parcel up to 2 kg within Ukraine now costs 90 UAH (it was 80), up to 10 kg 135 UAH, up to 30 kg 200 UAH; packaging a box up to 2 kg is 15 UAH (Liga.net, 04.04.2026). Show the delivery cost on the product page or in the cart, not at the last step.
Cash on delivery. From June 1, 2026, NovaPay's fee for cash on delivery is 1% + 10 UAH if the customer pays with a NovaPay card, and 2% + 20 UAH for cash or cards of other banks (DT-KT, 2026). Who pays the fee depends on the contract terms. For the risk of unclaimed parcels, see the article on cash on delivery.
Online payment. According to monobank (as of September 1, 2026), the internet acquiring fee for cards of Ukrainian banks is 1.3% at plata by mono and LiqPay and 1.5% at hutko and Portmone; for foreign cards at the first two, 2% (monobank). The page warns that rates change. According to the WayForPay report, about 60% of online purchases in 2025 were made from smartphones, and wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) made up roughly 55-65% of online payments (dev.ua). So checkout has to work comfortably on a phone (mobile UX, checkout). An overview of payment methods is in the article on payments in Ukraine.
Step 7. Required pages
- Seller details and terms. The Law on Consumer Protection (Article 13) requires that before a distance contract is concluded, the consumer is told the main characteristics of the product, the price including delivery and the payment terms, the procedure for terminating the contract, and other details: the seller must confirm this information in writing or by electronic message (Law No. 1023-XII, version of 24.12.2024 per the page).
- Returns. A consumer can terminate a distance contract by notifying the seller within 14 days of receiving the goods (under the same article; if the required information was not confirmed, the period extends to 90 days). Exceptions are possible for some goods: read the full text of the article. See the article on returns.
- Privacy. A privacy policy and a cookies banner, especially if you work with customers from the EU (GDPR).
Step 8. Analytics
Set it up before the first traffic, otherwise your first advertising money goes "into the dark". At minimum: Google Analytics with online store events. The "Ecommerce purchases" report in GA4 works if the site sends the `view_item`, `add_to_cart` and `purchase` events, and it shows revenue by product (price x quantity, excluding shipping and taxes) and the number of views, add-to-carts and purchases (Google Analytics Help). Product categories can be passed in five levels, which will be useful when analyzing the structure. What to look at next is in the article key metrics.
Step 9. First traffic
Do not spread yourself thin: choose one or two channels and measure.
- Google Merchant Center. Ukraine is among the countries where Shopping ads and free listings are supported, and the currency is the hryvnia (Google Merchant Center Help). You need a product feed.
- Marketplaces (Prom, Rozetka and others) give ready traffic for a commission and advertising: see retail media.
- Social media and messengers: social commerce.
- Search and AI answers: SEO trends, GEO.
- Reviews and trust: having reviews matters to a third of customers (see Deloitte above), so work with trust signals.
Step 10. What to do after launch
- The first 2-4 weeks. Collect customer reviews, see where people abandon the cart (cart abandonment), call the first customers and ask what stopped them from buying.
- Every week. Look at conversion, CAC, the share of unclaimed parcels, response speed. This shows whether losses are growing.
- Once a quarter. Count repeat purchases and LTV: the first customers show whether it makes sense to build the business on repeat orders.
- Automation and CRM. When there are more orders than you handle by hand, add a CRM and AI automation.
Common mistakes
- Spending the budget on design and development before testing demand.
- Not counting delivery, fees and unclaimed parcels that eat the margin.
- Not showing the delivery cost until the end of checkout.
- Forgetting the FOP income limit: 10,091,049 UAH a year is roughly 840,000 UAH a month on average, and with fast growth it can be reached sooner than it seems.
- Launching ads without analytics events set up.
FAQ
How much money is needed to open an online store? There is no single figure: it depends on the product, purchasing and platform. Among fixed costs, FOP registration is free and the ESV in 2026 is 1,902.34 UAH a month; the rest is laid out in the article how much it costs to own a store.
Do I need a FOP for an online store? According to NetFreedom, regular selling for profit counts as entrepreneurship. Check the specific decision with an accountant.
Which platform should I choose for my first store? The article names no platforms. The simplest option is enough to test an idea, and for choosing by stage see the article SaaS or a custom store.
How quickly can a store be launched? There is no fresh study on typical timelines. Technically a prototype is built in days or weeks, but the catalog and the arrangements for delivery and payment usually take longest to prepare.
