Payment methods for an online store in Ukraine
An online store's payment methods are what a shopper can pay with on the site: a bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, installment payment, cash on delivery with the delivery service, an invoice. Each method needs its own arrangement for the store: with a bank or payment service, with a carrier, or with a lending bank.
How many Ukrainians pay without cash
According to NBU data for the first half of 2026, non-cash operations made up 96% of all card operations by number and 67% by amount (in the first half of 2025: 95.3% and 65.3%). Payment for goods and services online accounted for 13.7% of non-cash operations by number and 16.6% by amount. The number of non-cash operations grew 7.5%, and the amount grew 16.6% compared with the first half of 2025 (NBU, 2026).
How card payment on a site works
Under the Law "On Payment Services," acquiring is a payment service consisting of accepting payment instruments, the result of which is a transfer of funds to the recipient; the acquirer is a licensed service provider (zakon.rada.gov.ua, version of 26.06.2026). Put simply: to accept cards, a store signs a contract with a bank or payment service that holds such a license.
A payment gateway (a market term, not a legal one) is a service that shows the shopper a payment form, passes the data to the bank and tells the site the result. The connection between the site and the gateway is an API integration. Fees and terms depend on the contract; there are no universal figures.
Payment methods
Card. The basic method. The shopper enters details on the gateway's secure page. The payment is accompanied by a fiscal receipt: see PRRO.
Apple Pay and Google Pay. This is a payment with a card stored in the phone, with no need to enter details. According to the NBU, in 2025 the number of tokenized cards grew 25.9% to 20.7 million, and every third active card in the country is tokenized (as reported by dev.ua, citing the NBU) (dev.ua, 28.05.2026). There is no separate official share of Apple Pay and Google Pay in online payments. The payment service WayForPay reports that 60% of online payments on its platform are made from mobile devices (53% in 2024, 57% in 2025) (same source); this is data from one platform, not the whole market.
Installments and pay-in-parts. The shopper takes out a loan at the bank, the store receives the full amount from the bank, and the bank charges the store a fee. A page of one bank (undated) says the store pays a service fee depending on the number of payments, plus an internet acquiring fee, and the funds are credited to the store within 15 minutes (PrivatBank). Other banks' terms differ, so compare them against your own contract.
Cash on delivery. The shopper pays on receipt. Through Nova Poshta, the money usually goes through NovaPay. According to a Debit-Credit publication (24.03.2026), the seller chooses between the standard tariff (the seller pays the fee: 2.5% for a NovaPay account and 3.3% for another bank) and the universal one, where the fee is split: the seller pays 0.5% or 1.3%, the shopper pays 1% + 10 UAH when paying by NovaPay card or 2% + 20 UAH when paying by another bank's card or cash (Debit-Credit). From June 1, 2026, the 1% + 10 UAH tariff also applies at branches, at self-service points and with auto-debit; NovaPay says roughly every third parcel in Ukraine goes with cash on delivery (Debit-Credit). Risks and unclaimed parcels: cash on delivery and non-pickup. These are one service's tariffs for 2026; other carriers have their own.
Example (illustrative numbers)
A store sells a product for 1,000 UAH. The shopper pays by card through the gateway: the store receives the amount minus the acquirer's fee under the contract (its size here is illustrative and depends on the contract). Another shopper chooses cash on delivery with the standard NovaPay tariff and a NovaPay account: 2.5% of 1,000 UAH is 25 UAH, paid by the seller. The difference is that in the second case there is a risk of non-pickup, while in the first the money is already with you.
How this connects to other systems
- With PRRO (a software cash register): every non-cash and cash payment has a receipt.
- With the accounting system: payments from the bank, the gateway and NovaPay arrive at different times and with a fee, so reconciliation is needed.
- With CRM and OMS: payment status changes order status.
- With checkout: the order and set of payment methods affects order completion, see cart abandonment.
Common mistakes
- A single payment method when shoppers are used to others.
- Not showing the final amount in the cart including the shopper's fees (for example, with cash on delivery).
- Not reconciling payments with orders.
- Not checking how the gateway reports the payment result, and losing paid orders.
