Performance Max

| Article: 3 min read | Marketing

Performance Max (PMax) is a Google Ads campaign type that shows ads across all of Google's inventory (Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps) from a single campaign. The system picks ads and channels from your assets and product feed itself, aiming at the conversion goal you set (Google Ads Help).

In plain words

You set a goal (for example, sales with value), a budget and assets: images, texts, video, a product feed from Merchant Center. Then the algorithm decides where and to whom to show ads. You control less than in classic Search or Shopping, but Google is gradually adding transparency and control.

What you can control

According to Google's help: - Asset groups: sets of creatives for a topic or audience. For a store it makes sense to group by product categories and pick product filters so that ads lead to the matching page. - Audience signals: a hint to the system about who your buyers resemble; they speed up learning but do not limit delivery. - Final URL expansion: Google may send a person to another, more relevant page of your site. You are responsible for checking those pages and the generated texts. - Brand exclusions and negative keywords: so the campaign does not steal searches for your own name, which would bring the person anyway. - Search themes: queries you expect from buyers; up to 25 per asset group, treated with the priority of phrase or broad match, while an exact-match keyword in a Search campaign has higher priority. Search themes respect brand exclusions (Google Ads Help, search themes).

Channel report

The channel report shows how results were split between Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, with ROAS or CPA performance, spend and conversions. There are limitations too: you cannot set a budget per channel, offline conversions by store are combined into one total, and data is available for the period after June 6, 2025. After changes to a campaign, Google advises waiting one to two weeks for it to stabilize (Google Ads Help, channel performance).

How an owner should read this

  1. If the campaign includes both brand and non-brand, look separately at how many sales came from queries with your name. There is a brand exclusion and a search categories report for this. Otherwise PMax can look more effective than it is, because it takes buyers who were looking for you anyway.
  2. Judge by margin, not only by ROAS: see ROAS and ROMI.
  3. Look at the channel report: if a large part of the budget goes to Display or YouTube and sales there are weak, improve the quality of assets and the feed.
  4. Check the campaign's real contribution with a test, not just a report: see incrementality.

What about Ukrainian data

Promodo (H1 2025) recorded that cost per click rose in most categories of Ukrainian e-commerce: medicines +53%, fashion +25%, jewelry +31%, pet goods +13%, auto +18%; in groceries it fell by 7%. Ad spend in some niches grew faster than sales (Promodo, 2025). This is the market overall, not PMax separately. There is no separate independent data on PMax effectiveness in Ukraine; most "case studies" come from agencies and are not verified.

Common mistakes

  • Giving PMax a weak or outdated feed: product ads rely on data from the feed.
  • Not separating brand.
  • Changing settings every day: the system is learning.
  • Too few conversions and wrong conversion tracking: the algorithm optimizes what you showed it.
  • Believing the "black box" will sort everything out.

FAQ

What is Performance Max in plain words? One Google Ads campaign for all Google channels: the system picks where to show ads itself.

Can I find out where PMax is shown? Yes: the channel report and the search categories report in Google Ads, with the limitations described above.

Is PMax suitable for a small store? It depends on the number of conversions and the quality of the feed. Google's help has no universal thresholds.

What are search themes? Optional query hints, up to 25 per asset group.
